Part 8 – Ascent from the Sunken Citadel
The group made their way out of the Twilight Grove without incident. They no longer desired to interrogate Baeloch the Outcast, and put him to death before he regained consciousness. They trudged all the way back through the long passageways, then investigated rooms they had not yet searched. Finally, they returned to the main compost room and climbed the thick vines which lined the shaft, thus ascending from the grove level to the fortress level.
In the Hall of Dragons, they met with the Kobold Queen. She was very pleased that they had helped Meepo rescue their white dragon; and had also killed all the warriors of the goblin tribe. As agreed, she gave them their reward, the key hanging from her throne. Then Meepo led them safely out of Kobold territory.
On their way toward the exit, they investigated a rusted iron keg and battled a Water Mephit. They overcame more obstacles – a glowing, musical globe; arrow traps; a dragon riddle; a spiked pit – and entered the Tomb of a Failed Dragonpriest. They battled the tomb’s guardian, a quasit, and forced it to flee. They opened the massive sarcophagus, which awakened the dragonpriest, who had been transformed into a troll. Outnumbered, the troll was defeated and they burned its body to keep it from regenerating.
The group completed their exit from the citadel, ascended the narrow switchback stairs to the top ledge, then climbed out of the dark ravine. On the surface, Magna searched and located the rest of their group. The campers were introduced to Aiden and Grimble Gromble, then Arrioch explained the fate of Arrafel to his tearful sister. They began their return journey the next day. As they neared the final road to Darford, Grimble Gromble took his leave to go alone, deeper into the forest of Willowdale. At Arrion Manor, they received their reward for rescuing Arrioch and the signet ring of Arrafel.
