Part 3 – Journey to the Sunken Citadel
After the incident with Tinnfang Warbel, the group returned to their camp, finding all was exactly as they left it. While the men were busy breaking down the camp, Arragwyn cooked a hardy meal with fresh supplies.
During their journey, the group noticed that Yriadel was not herself since the encounter with Tinnfang Warbel. She occasionally wandered off, and they had to keep constant watch over her. Magna and Glen also noticed a Goldfinch shadowing the group. In the afternoon, they left the trail and emerged onto the Old Road. During a rest break, they witnessed Yriadel seeming to converse with the Goldfinch. While distracted by this strange sight, the group was ambushed by two squads of goblins, each led by a hobgoblin. The team suffered only a few minor injuries, but they killed nearly all the goblins.
In their evening camp, Arragwyn once again prepared a healthy meal for the group, cooking fresh slabs of pork with carrots and peas. In the night they were attacked by four Twig Blights, but they defeated them without injury. Yriadel deduced that these were the same type of creatures that killed the cow they had spotted the day before.
In the morning, the group was surprised by a visit from Arnfast the Ranger. He had followed the group in order to retrieve Arragwyn the Fair. Her father had deduced where she ran off to and hired Arnfast to accompany her home safely. He gave them information about the Sunken Citadel, its goblins, and the magic fruit which is purchased annually by the Arrion clan.
Near midday, the group approached the ravine which provided entrance to the Sunken Citadel. Sidric, Breena, Arragwyn and Arnfast elected to stay above ground and watch over the horses, while the main party descended into the dark ravine. On the first ledge below the surface, they were attacked by three dire rats. They carefully descended down narrow, dangerous, switch-back steps. Eventually, they spied the top of their destination: a subterranean citadel, long forgotten.
Part 4 – Approach to the Sunken Citadel
They gained initial entry into what appeared to have once been a circular tower with crenellated battlements. Inside sprawled four goblin bodies, all apparently slain in combat about a month previous.
They approached a stone door which featured a relief sculpture of a stylistically carved dragon in flight. It was securely closed and locked, so they used their Chime of Opening to pass through. In the next room, a crystalline globe glowed with a soft blue light, and faint tinkling notes sprang forth from it. When Lee approached it, it began to play loud, brooding music. Mystic fear overcame the group and they fled back into the courtyard. Attempts to reenter the room resulted in the globe playing music even louder, so they decided to try a different route.
They walked down a long hallway which ended at a wooden door. They passed through the door and entered a large chamber, where they encountered a whimpering kobold. The kobold called himself Meepo. Keeper of Dragons, and he explained that the kobold clan’s dragon had been stolen by goblins. He offered to lead the group to his kobold leader, so their questions could be answered.
In the kobold throne room, Meepo presented the group to Yusdrayl, the Kobold Queen. She answered many of their questions, and was quite pleased when the group announced they planned to kill all the goblins. They spotted a key hanging from her throne, and she offered to give it to them if they would retrieve their stolen dragon. She ordered Meepo to accompany them into the goblin territory.
