Part 3 – Within the Sunken Citadel
Meepo led the group from the kobold throne room, through the Kobold-controlled areas, then through a long, narrow hallway which ended with a wooden door. Beyond the door, Dodge and Magna took the lead. Magna’s tracking skills detected recent signs of dire rats. He also detected month-old tracks made by about 5 booted humans, moving through the northward hallways. They suspected they might be on the trail of their quarry.
Soon enough, they encountered dire rats, but easily exterminated them. Where the passageway split west, Magna detected that 5 sets of tracks continued north, but only 4 returned south, then west. In a room at the end of the passageway, they defeated the “mama rat” and her minions. Within the room, they discovered the corpse of Crispus, partially devoured by the rats.
They took the westward path and were attacked by goblins throwing javelins across a hallway strewn with caltrops. One of the goblins escaped and warned a troop in the next room. The battle continued but the heroes were victorious. In the goblin stockade, they freed 3 kobolds and Grimble Gromble the Gnome. Grimble explained that after he was captured by goblins he had been imprisoned for over a month. He also described Arrioch, Arrafel, Mauritius and Larz, who were also captives but had been removed because “Belak wanted them.” The group utilized the room as a safe location to get some much needed rest.
The next day, Dodge opened a door which triggered a pit trap into which he fell. The noise alerted a squad of goblins who attacked from the rear. Though their group was split into two rooms and they were briefly deprived of assistance from Dodge, they defeated the goblins without casualty to themselves.
Beyond the pit, they entered a trophy room and were attacked by a white dragon wyrmling – the “mascot” of the kobolds. It breathed ice upon Dodge, Magna and Glen. Kyran grappled the dragon and the group restrained it with a rope. Meepo departed with the dragon.
They found 2 separate doors through which they could hear the sounds of many goblins. They split into 2 teams, timed their entry, then burst into the room. Though the former cathedral was filled with over 40 goblins and hobgoblins, most were too young or old to be combatants. They defeated the warriors, then were attacked by 2 more squads of goblins that rushed into the room. All enemies were defeated without casualty.
