Book 4 – Part 8
The group pushed themselves to stay ahead of the ork trackers. They endured fatigue and hypothermia but made it to the Shatten Escarpment – the edge of Groes Bryniau – without serious injury. They battled four orks that were guarding the trail down Grismawr [Bigstairs], then began their descent.
At the base of Grismawr was a ford called Grisrhyd [Stairsford] which crossed River Nodens. When the group was about half way across the river ford, they were ambushed from the south by about two dozen orks, most of them archers. Pinned down in the slippery ford, the group became divided as some had to retreat north. Then another squad of orks attacked from the north. Eventually the orks were defeated and the group suffered only a few minor injuries.
Later, the company encountered two young Kambrian girls along the trail, but they would not speak. In the distance they could see a small thorp surrounded by a palisade, and they headed for safety and warmth at the village of Gristrev [Stairstown].
