Book 1 – Part 1 – Journey to the Crypt
Reeve Ulfrid selected 5 youngsters for this year’s Quest for the Steadfast Flame: Dodge, Glenlivet, Kyran, Li-Al Saar and Magna. Yríadel was added to the roster as a late addition the night before their departure.
Just 2 hours outside of Darford, they were attacked by orcs. They defeated the orcs, who turned out to be mere illusions. On their first night together in the forest, they successfully avoided being attacked by a pack of hungry wolves. On the second day of travel, near the shores of Gray Lake, they received verbal advice from a friendly voice. The owner of the voice preferred to remain hidden, though he did confess he wore a scarlet tunic and a blue green hood. It was raining when they reached the valley of the crypt that afternoon, and they had difficulties descending safely. Yríadel healed all their wounds, revealing her abilities as granted through Freyja, which manifested in a glowing, golden light around her. They located the entrance to the Crypt and entered.
In the entrance hall of the crypt, the group was immediately attacked by animated skeletons. After they defeated the skeletons, they found the corpses of fellow Darford residents Hrothgar and Sturm, apparently killed recently by the same skeletons. They heard a mournful wailing and followed the sound where they discovered Sidric. He was traumatized by the massacre of this friends and had barricaded himself into a room. He was worried about his sister Breena, wandering around somewhere in the crypt. They encountered a giant beetle which attacked and sprayed acid. Kyran revealed some of his sorcerous power, as he projected a black ray which exploded on the beetle. Nearby they discovered the dead body of Waldrik the wright.
In a room with a pool of clear water, Kyran detected a magic key at the bottom of the pool. Dodge swam below and retrieved it. In another chamber, they battled a wood golem which held 2 tower shields. In the next room, they found precious supplies that had been left for them by the people of Darford. The room beyond contained a massive arrow trap, but the tower shields protected them.
The final room on this upper level had stairs leading down. From behind pillars attacked bloody human skeletons. They defeated the skeletons, but after a few minutes they rose and attacked again. After the second time, the group dismembered the skeletons and threw them into a pit. Thoroughly fatigued, they returned to Sidric’s safe room and retired for some rest.
