Book 4 – Part 9
The company was cautiously allowed to shelter within the thorp of Gristrev, where they met Elder Siorus and others. They feasted in the Gristrev longhouse, exchanged news and tales with the residents, then slept. In the morning they noticed that Gorteyrn had disappeared. Eventually they learned that he had been mercifully put to death by the Gristrev leaders to protect their thorp from reprisals by the March Outlaws.
During the day, the group continued to rest, heal and regain strength. Just before sunset the thorp was attacked by a squad of orks mounted on dire boars, while four troops of ork warriors, archers and trackers proceeded to surround the thorp. The company helped the villagers repel the ork riders, plus an additional vanguard of orks that attacked the palisade gate.
While ork drummers pounded a beat, the armies established siege positions and set up camps. The ork commander, Zogha Pirmuz, attempted to parley, but Siorus refused to surrender.
The second attack began with waves of flaming arrows, followed by a full attack on the gate and the palisade. Once the longhouse and a section of palisade wall caught fire, the orks backed away, waiting for the fire to weaken the defenses while they prepared for a third attack.
